Bethanie Guesthouse is located in a beautiful location on Lake Kivu, built on a hill that stretches down to the lake. The hotel is about a Rwf 500 moto ride from where the bus will drop you off. The road is actually a loop and makes a nice, long walk if you want to go exploring. It’s a good idea to take your moto driver’s phone number so you can come and go as you please. The guesthouse isn’t exactly handy for town and you won’t find a moto just by heading out to the street.
Restaurant AreaThe first time I stayed here I was in a room on the opposite side to where the lake is. The rooms are cheaper and perfectly fine, but nothing special. If you really want to see what makes this place special, try to get a room right down by the lake. You’ll have a porch area with a couple of chairs that looks right out onto the lake and it’s a gorgeous spot to relax. The rooms by the lake cost Rwf 35,000 for a double (the prices are per room, not per person), doubles without the lake view cost Rwf 25,000 and twins are Rwf 15,000. I stayed in a twin here once that’s on the opposite side of the building, away from the lake. They’re nice enough but there’s not much of a view of anything.
If you go out of the guesthouse and walk down the road to the right, you can eventually get out to a nice spot to watch the sun go down. Moriah Hill Resort is also down this road and they have a super small but sandy beach area if you’re looking to stretch out and sun yourself. But don’t stretch too far… it really is small. You might have to pay for this honour.
The rooms are pretty simple but comfortable enough. They have mosquito nets and some have TVs. The restaurant is right down on the water and makes a nice place to enjoy a meal. Beware of large groups that come through for buffets and can make it hard to get a seat. The food is pretty average but the setting is nice.
You can take boats from here out to some of the islands. Love Island has a volleyball court and a small beach as well as a lone cow stranded on the other side of this tiny island. There are a few others on offer too. It’s popular to hire a boat for the day and check out a few different islands. Prices are negotiable and are for the whole boat, so cram as many people on it as you can if you want to share the costs. It’s common just to ask other guests at the hotel to see if they’re interested in a boat rental.
Their number is 0252 568 235 and bookings would be recommended if you want a good room, especially on weekends as this place is a popular Kigali escape.
